Orange Cookies

Since I was a little kid, I have always favored orange candies.  When my girls open a pack of treats, they know to give me the orange skittles, runts, sour patch kids, gummi bears, what have you…. Orange has just always been my favorite.  I’ll never forget the Christmas when my sweet husband filled my stocking with gummy orange slices, chocolate orange sticks, and only orange starbursts (picked out of several whole bags I’m sure).  I think it’s my favorite flavor because orange always tastes like orange.  Plain and simple.

Well, these cookies have plenty of orange flavoring.  The best kind…from about 5 real oranges.

Orange Cookies

from Peacocks on my Porch

  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup orange juice (just squeeze a couple that you zest)
  • 3 T orange zest

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.  Beat sugar and butter until fluffy.  Add sour cream and eggs; beat well.  Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, orange juice, and orange zest.  Blend well.  Drop by spoon on ungreased cookie sheets.  Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges just start to brown (they are better a little underdone than overdone).  Frost while warm (I frost them right out of the oven, still on the pans, so the frosting melts and turns into a glaze.)

Orange Frosting

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 T orange zest
  • 2-3 T orange juice

Combine and frost warm cookies.

How about you?  What’s your favorite “flavor”.  And what is the best orange candy you’ve ever eaten?  Here’s mine.

So….today I fed 3 or 4 of these to my 1 yr old. I figured they counted as fruit….right?

You must really love those chocolate oranges available during the holidays! I like the chocolate and orange combo, but prefer the rest of my orange flavor in the form of juice.

Indeed plain and simple .. and SO pretty! This is the perfect time to try these.

These cookies look really good! My favorite fruit candy flavor is lime… I bet these cookies would taste equally delicious with them as well :)

I guess I love all citrus flavors. The idea of using lime is great! Lemon, grapefruit…I’m going to have to experiment!

I love eating oranges! I especially love making orange muffins or loafs during January or February because of the refreshing taste the citrus fruit offers.
I love the 3 tbsp zest and 2/3 cup orange juice! :]

These look amazing! (Orange has always been my favorite flavor, too.) I must make these ASAP!

They look SO pretty! Do you think I could make an egg less version of these? How should I adjust the recipe if I want to use substitutes for the eggs (no egg replacers, as well) and the sour cream?

Have you ever used flax seed as an egg replacement? Combine 1 T of ground flax seed and 3 T water. As for the sour cream, you could use a plain yogurt or a vegan sour cream.
Let me know if those work for you!

These cooking look beautiful. My husband and I are also big fans of orange:) It seems as though I am always remaking recipes to make them orange. I will definitely have to make these soon.

We would have been a perfect candy sharing match. I love oranges but, I pick out any orange flavored candy. I have since I was a kid. I need to go back and taste an orange skittle now that I am older. I am always looking for simple citrus desserts. These cookies look dangerously delicious.

I love orange too, but lemon is my all time favorite. The reason i hate grape candy is because it doesn’t taste like grapes. 😀 We just launched our online Seasonal Potluck and February is Oranges month! If you’d like to link up your recipe, we’d love to have you!

I had a bowl full of oranges yesterday and I was searching for a recipe to use them on. I was thinking frosted orange cookies sounded good, but couldn’t find a recipe I liked. I ended up making an orange pound cake with a crunchy orange topping. Wish I had some of these cookies too!

I love orange sour patch kids!
